Top Traditional Dishes and Their Recipies in the Swedish Cuisine

The food in Sweden is very similar to the cuisine of the Nordic countries. Potato is the main ingredient in almost every national dish. Thanks to its geographical situation of the country, it has a good supply of seafood and peculiar fish species that is why fish is an important sample in their cuisine. Fish can be served in a variety of ways, pickled, freshly and smoked. Herring is ranked among the most popular fishes in Sweden. Some of them are something worth trying during your stay. Traditional dishes

Smörgåsbord– One of the most popular dishes is Smorgasbord, usually served for lunch. The mail has specific costumes to follow as the dishes should be eaten in a specific order. One can begin with herring and other fishes, than followed by cold meats and salads, and last the hot dishes like meatballs and cooked vegetables are selected. Surstromming– is another traditional food in Sweden, Creamy dipping sauce is always accompanied with the fish. It tastes delicious. Its main ingredients are: butter, egg yolks, cups cream and lemon juice.

Köttbulla -Swedish Meatballs

Its main ingredients are: 1½ground beef, ½ground lean pork, 2 cups water, 2egges, ½ cup breadcrumbs, pepper and salt for taste, butter and a small onion. Way of preparation: Combine the beef and pork in a large bowl. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the chopped onions and cook until the onion is golden. When the onion is golden add to the ground meat and mix it well until it is smooth enough. Make balls using your hands and then cook the balls in the saucepan.

Blandad Fruktsoppa (Swedish Fruit Soup)

The main ingredients are: 1¾ cups mixed dried fruits, ½ cup golden seedless raisins, 3-4 cinnamon sticks, 4 cups water, 1 orange cut in slices, 2¼ cups unsweetened pineapple juice, ½ cup currant jelly, ¼ cup sugar, 2 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca and salt.

Procedure: Combine in a large pot the dried fruits, water and the cinnamon. Bring to boil and simmer until the fruits are tender, than add the remaining ingredients and cook it. Usually it is served warm.

Plättar (Swedish Pancakes)

Ingredients: 3 eggs, 1¼ cups milk, ¾ cup flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, ½ teaspoon salt and Lingonberry sauce. Way of preparing: beat the eggs until thick and add the milk, flour, sugar, and mix until smooth. Drop a small amount from batter in a hot griddle and make pancakes. You can serve the pancakes with lingonberry sauce. It is an ideal dessert.

Artsoppa Pea Soup

Ingredients: 2 cups split peas, 8 cups cold water, baked ham, 1 onion, 1 carrot, salt, pepper, and there are some optional ingredients such as the ginger, marjoram and croutons. Preparation: Rinse the peas and add in a large soup kettle. Add the water, ham, onion, carrot, and seasonings and put it on the heat to simmer. When it is finished you can serve it with croutons.
